Emi Miyoshi was born in Japan in 1977 and studied dance at the University of Ehime / Japan. In 1999 she founded the dance collective “yummydance” with six Japanese dancers. At the same time she works as a choreographer with her own pieces. Her dance pieces have been shown at various dance festivals, at the Toyota Choreography Award 2005 (Tokyo), at the dance festival dampf 05, at tanz NRW 07 (Cologne), at the International tanz festival (Freiburg) and others Stadttheater Köln worked under the direction of Amanda Miller. In 2008 she received a grant from the Kunststiftung NRW and she took part as a choreographer at the SiWiC (Swiss international training course in choreography with Jochen Heckmann).
Since 2013 she has been working as a choreographer and dancer in various projects with artists, musicians and dancers in Freiburg. In 2016, Emi Miyoshi received a 3-year conceptual grant from the City of Freiburg's Department of Culture. Her pieces “MORINONAKA - Im Wald” (2017) and “IN MY ROOM” (2019) were both awarded the Dance and Theater Prize of the City of Stuttgart and the State of Baden Württemberg. Since 2018 she has been leading regular open dance and movement workshops, such as “Time To Share Movements” at the Stadttheater Freiburg and “Come and Dance” at the Kunstverein Freiburg.
In 2020 she received a 3-year conceptual grant from the state of Baden-Württemberg.
Since 2014, Emi Miyoshi and the SHIBUI collective have also presented their work in the context of the visual arts and thus in a more museum-like setting. The piece "MORINONAKA -im Wald" had its world premiere at the Kunstverein Freiburg and it was presented at the Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart as part of the 6 TAGE FREI festival.
In 2019 she showed work by Simone Forti and her solo DEPTH OF FIELD in the Landesmuseum Stuttgart as part of Art basel in KUNSTHAUSBASELLAND BASEL (CH).
2019 Artist in Residency in Taipei artist Village, Taiwan.
Miyoshi is a currently on the advisory board of local dance network TANZNETZ Freiburg.
In June 2020 the SHUBUI Kollektiv GbR received the 6-month Reload grant from the German Federal Cultural Foundation.
The SHIBUI collective has recently received TANZPAKT RECONNECT funding from Diehl + Ritter. The funding enables the SHIBUI collective to strengthen its structure, to professionalize it and to network better nationwide. In addition, the funding enables the SHIBUI collective to develop formats for outreaching dance program.
